As “The Voice for Real Estate™ in Kentucky,” a primary value of Kentucky REALTORS® is to serve and represent its members in regulatory and legislative matters; to keep the REALTOR® central to the real estate transaction; to promote member integrity, competency and responsible citizenship; and to advocate and protect private property rights and equal housing opportunity.
All Kentucky REALTORS® members belong to one or more of the 18 local REALTOR® associations statewide and the National Association of REALTORS®. As members of organized real estate, REALTORS® subscribe to a strict Code of Ethics, which ensures the highest level of professionalism.

REALTOR® Code of Ethics
As a REALTOR member, you are also required to take Code of Ethics training in addition to your required continuing education. The cycle began on January 1, 2019. The deadline for this cycle is December 31, 2020. Not completing this requirement could result in suspended membership privileges. Read the consequences for failing to complete Code of Ethics training.
NAR’s Board of Directors approved a change to the Code of Ethics training requirement, extending it from every two years to every three years. This extends the current cycle deadline from Dec. 31, 2020, to Dec. 31, 2021.
There are many different options available for completion – contact KRI at 800.274.2185 for more information.
Deadline for real estate education
All active real estate licensees are required to attend six (6) hours of continuing education courses, with three (3) hours being in real estate law. The courses must be sponsored or approved by the Kentucky Real Estate Commission (KREC). The mandatory continuing education requirement deadline is December 31st of each calendar year. Additionally, Kentucky requires a state specific continuing education course (the Kentucky Core Course) to be completed by all active licensees once every four years (this course counts for CE credit).
Scholarship Opportunities
KRI makes scholarships available to members who want to obtain the GRI designation as well as provides scholarships to Kentucky residents (member and non-members) who wish to pursue a career in real estate and further their education at a post-secondary institution.

Professional Standards
What does the term REALTOR® mean for you and the consumers you serve? One of the most important aspects of your REALTOR® membership is your agreement to abide by the REALTOR® Code of Ethics. As a REALTOR®, you hold yourself to a standard that was first adopted in 1913 and continues to be revised as the industry changes. This sets you apart from your competitors in a way that is meaningful and relevant to your clients and customers.
Legal Hotline
A benefit to KYR members, the Legal Hotline is available to member brokers and/or broker designees. Individual agents of brokerages may submit legal questions through their broker. Questions to the Hotline are submitted via the website and KYR’s legal counsel calls the member back within 24 hours to discuss their legal issue. Click here to access the Legal Hotline.
Complaint Process
While the majority of real estate transactions close without incident, there is a possibility that a problem or dispute can occur. If your client or customer is dissatisfied with your services, discuss the situation with them and find out how you may address their questions or concerns. As a new real estate professional, you will want to consult with your principal broker regularly and seek their counsel immediately when a problem does arise. Open, constructive discussion often resolves questions or differences, eliminating the need for further action, however, occasionally a dispute arises which cannot be resolved through communication and negotiation.
Clients and customers can file a complaint with Kentucky REALTORS® if they believe a REALTOR® has violated the REALTOR® Code of Ethics. The association enforces the REALTOR® Code of Ethics through the Professional Standards Process. The Professional Standards Process includes several options available to consumers and REALTORS®. Click to view
Filing an Ethics Complaint
A complaint must site one or more articles of the Code of Ethics, and includes a statement as to why the party feels that the article has been violated.
Filing a Request for Arbitration
If a REALTOR® finds they are in a commission dispute with another REALTOR®, instead of taking legal action, REALTORS® are required to file a Request for Arbitration through the Kentucky REALTORS®.
Filing a Request for Ombudsman Services
The role of the ombudsman is to identify and attempt to facilitate a resolution of misunderstandings and/or disagreements before matters evolve into a formal complaint.
Specially trained REALTOR® members of the Kentucky REALTORS® are appointed by local associations to serve on the Grievance Committee, serve on Hearing Panels, Appeal Panels, as Mediators and as Ombudsman. These REALTOR® members receive training annually and volunteer their time in order to assist consumers and REALTORS® in the resolution of their disputes. If you would like to serve on one these committees, contact your location association.
